Yilan A-Z Board Game

A bilingual English-learning board game

Yilan A-Z is the 2021-2022 Fulbright Taiwan Yilan County ETA (English Teaching Assistant) Project: a bilingual board game (English & Chinese) that introduces Yilan County’s specialities and landmarks for students to learn and practice English outside of the textbook — within their own cultural context.

Our official website collects all information, translations, demos, and downloadables to maximize accessibility.

Yilan A-Z was distributed county-wide in elementary and junior high classrooms in the 2022-2023 school year.

Proposed, coordinated, and spearheaded by Emily Liu.
Team leaders: Emily Liu (Writing), Emma Tam & Benji Aliaga (Design), Shannon Lu (Media)

A-Z Cards

When players pass any corner space, they collect an A-Z card and read it out loud to practice their speaking skills.

What’s in a name?

To play Yilan A-Z, players travel around their home county, passing through 15 different locations. As they progress, they are challenged through fun activities to practice not only English speaking and listening skills, but also reading comprehension.

We designed our A-Z cards by selecting and highlighting unique characteristics of Yilan County. Each letter corresponds to a different place or thing (see examples below), and are accompanied by bilingual practice sentences and visuals.

Yilan A-Z also includes Location cards, which get players active and shake up the gameplay — in both lucky and unlucky ways!
